Perth has sweated through its hottest day in almost two years. WA’s capital reached 41.9C at 1.20pm on Wednesday, well above the 39C that was forecast for the first day of a “severe” three-day heatwave.
It got even hotter in the suburbs, with Perth Airport hitting 43.2C at 2.04pm, Gooseberry Hill reaching 44C and Pearce getting to 44.2C at 2.32pm.

Students at Bob Hawke College in Subiaco suffered on the first day of the school year after a power failure cut air conditioning, internet and landlines.
The Department of Education said power outages were reported in six schools, but all remained open.
“The department is working with affected schools and Western Power to ensure there is minimal disruption for students and staff (on Thursday),” a spokesperson said.

Western Power has warned of outages, and Synergy told customers to switch off unnecessary appliances and limit electricity use between 5pm and 9pm.
“If you are using an air conditioner, set it to 24 degrees, which still feels cold when it’s hot outside,” Synergy said.
“Remember that each degree lower on your thermostat can increase your electricity costs.
“On warm nights, try to open your house to let in any breezes and use fans to move the cool air around.”
Trains have been slowed by up to 30km/h in sections, with the extreme heat a risk of warping the steel tracks.
Perth is set to sweat through Thursday and Friday, with temperatures expected to reach 39C and 37C respectively, before a slightly cooler change of 30C on Saturday and 27C on Sunday.
