Orlando Pirates legend Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi has urged Kaizer Chiefs to consider signing both Bongani Zungu and Kermit Erasmus.
Zungu and Erasmus recently parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates respectively after what was a disappointing season for them.
Now, speaking to the media at a Betway function this week as per IOL, Vilakazi is of the view that the two veteran players can help Chiefs.
According to Vilakazi, Chiefs need experience both on and off the field, and with Nasreddine Nabi coming, he feels the current players can learn a thing or two from Zungu and Erasmus.
In his own words, the former Bafana Bafana star said he, himself, and others learned a lot from the likes of Jerry Sikhosana and Ernest Mtawali as young players.
Apart from Zungu and Erasmus, the now football pundit made mention of Andile Jali, who is also a free agent after leaving Moroka Swallows in January.
Of course, Jali came close to joining Chiefs before moving to Swallows but the two parties failed to agree terms.
And chances of him or Chiefs going for his services are close to none.
PIRATES LEGEND ‘TSO’ WANTS CHIEFS TO GO FOR ZUNGU, ERASMUS AND JALI
“(Bongani) Zungu just left Sundowns, why not? (Kermit) Erasmus just left Pirates, why not (bring them in)?” Vilakazi asked.
“You need experienced guys. Chiefs right now needs leaders outside the field (in the form of coach Nabi), (but also) leaders inside the field.
“They do have some good players that I think can learn more, improve and be good players. But without experienced players surrounding them, it’s going to be very difficult. Andile Jali is here as well.
“We all learn through our bigger brothers. Even I never went into the professional set-up and did things all by myself. I got guidance from the bigger brothers – the likes of Ernest Mtawali and Jerry Sikhosana. These are some of the guys that guided us.
“Sometimes younger players tend to be lazy, which is normal. But when there’s these older players, you know you will get shouted at. They give youngsters courage and motivation to work hard.”
AMAKHOSI EXPECTED TO OVERHAUL THE SQUAD
Amakhosi are expected to overhaul the squad after current one performed poorly last season.
However, signing free agents that over the age of 30 could be seen as a step backwards given the abundance of young talent in the league.
After all, Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr previously vowed to reduce the average age of the squad, and they successfully did that in July 2022.
