Prime Minister Andrew Holness has promised that the government will respond to the various protests over road conditions across the island.
Mr. Holness, who was speaking at a meeting of the Jamaica Labour Party’s Central Executive in St. Ann on Sunday, implied that some of the protests were orchestrated, but said the government would make the necessary provisions for road repairs islandwide.
“So today I speak to those communities – those who are frustrated about their roads, those who have given up hope that their roads will ever be repaired; those that find themselves drawn into schemes to protest. I say to you that for the first time in a long time in Jamaica’s history, your government is in a position to make budgetary allocation to treat with road repairs, not highway building now but road repairs.”
He said the road work will cover rural, urban inner city, residential and farming communities as well as housing schemes.
In one of the more recent protests, classes were disrupted at Frome Technical and Grange Hill high schools in Westmoreland last week, as taxi operators who ply the Lucea to Grange Hill, Savanna-La-Mar and Little London to Grange Hill routes, withdrew their service for three days and blocked the Toll Gate main road over poor road conditions.
