Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the crime and security portfolio, Fitz Bailey, has appealed to members of the public who may have information about the death of Melissa Silvera to share it with the investigators.
Bailey’s plea followed Thursday’s arrest of her husband, Jolyan Silvera, as a suspect in her death.
“Your cooperation is critical in helping us piece together the puzzle,” the senior cop said.
Police were alerted to the death of Melissa on November 10, 2023, about 7 a.m. The police initially responded to what Bailey said was thought to be a “death investigation” at the couple’s Upper St Andrew house. The senior cop said that after the autopsy report was released, it was revealed that Melissa did not die from natural causes “but as a result of possible gunshot wounds”.
Jolyan, the former St Mary West member of parliament, was arrested after the investigators became satisfied that there was “sufficient evidence to mount a viable prosecution”.
Bailey said that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was consulted on the matter and there was agreement that a viable case could be brought against the former lawmaker.
“This significant development is a testament to the dedication of the JCF in serving the public and upholding the principles of being a force for good,” Bailey said.
Melissa’s remains were buried last Friday, following a funeral at the St Andrew Parish Church. In a tribute, read on his behalf by his mother, Cynthia Silvera, Jolyan pledged to carry forward “the flame of your love, ensuring that your legacy flourishes in the hearts of our sons, and the countless lives you’ve touched”.
