Prince Harry’s claim in his tell-all memoir Spare has been put to question with critics noting inconsistencies in some of the Duke’s accounts.
The Duke of Sussex’s highly anticipated memoir was released in January 2023. The book offers a candid and deeply personal account of his life in the Royal Family, his struggles with mental health, his relationships, and his journey towards independence.
However, some of his claims about his own personal life with Meghan Markle have been cast into doubt, reports Mirror Online.
One such passage comes when Harry recalls his first date with Meghan, which took place at Soho House in London.
Writing about their first meeting, the royal describes Meghan as wearing a black sweatshirt, jeans and heels.
And while he notes that he knows nothing about fashion, he said he could tell she was “chic”, admiring her “no frills” look and describing her as “heart-attack beautiful”.
But his comments are at odds with Meghan’s own account. When she was reunited with her Givenchy wedding dress for an ITV documentary, Meghan revealed she had a thread from the dress sewn into her veil as her “something blue”.
Seeing the dress for the first time since her wedding during ITV’s Queen and Commonwealth, she said: “My goodness, it’s amazing, isn’t it? Somewhere in here, there’s a piece of… did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside.
“It was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date. It’s nice to see it again. It’s beautiful.”
Their first date has been surrounded by some confusion. Following their 2018 engagement, Meghan and Harry gave a joint interview where they claimed to have been set up on a blind date by a mutual friend.
When asked if it was a set-up, both laughed, with Meghan confirming, “Yes, it was definitely a set-up – it was a blind date.”
However, in their docu-series, the couple revealed they had actually FaceTimed before meeting in person for the first time at 76 Dean Street in London’s Soho.
Interestingly, in his book, Harry mentions only that they exchanged messages before their first date, with no mention of the FaceTime call.
Since stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan have spoken out about their experiences within the royal family on multiple occasions, though some of their statements have been questioned by experts.
In March 2021, during an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan claimed that after joining the royal family, she did not see her passport again until she and Harry relocated to California.
She explained, “You couldn’t just go. You couldn’t. I mean, you have to understand, as well, when I joined that family, that was the last time, until we came here, that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys. All that gets turned over. I didn’t see any of that anymore.”
Critics were quick to note that Meghan had visited at least 13 countries during that time period.
The luxurious trips she took after she started dating Harry included visits to New York, Ibiza, Italy, and Botswana. They also participated in three official royal tours, visiting Morocco, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji, where she would have needed to present her passport to border officials on each occasion.
