It has been widely reported that the Spanish royal follows the Perricone diet, which is all about anti-inflammatory eating.

There is a 28-day diet plan, but the principles of the diet can be followed on a longer term basis too.

Perricone MD reads: “Mental clarity, increased energy and an overall boost in physical well-being – it’s all possible with Dr Perricone’s 28-Day Anti-Inflammatory Diet.

“By combining the right nutrition, supplements, exercise and skincare, this program can help you look and feel your best at any age by reducing inflammation.”

It is believed that the Perricone diet is not only good for maintaining a healthy weight but can improve your overall appearance too, which may explain Letizia’s fabulous skin.

Perricone MD explained that an “inflammatory response is your immune system’s reaction to anything that could harm it, such as injury, environmental pollutants, tobacco smoke and certain dietary ingredients (i.e. sugar)”.

Low-grade inflammation associated with diet often goes unnoticed but in the long term there can be an associated increase in free radicals, which can “lead to cell damage and accelerated signs of ageing”.

There is research to suggest that “low-grade, long-term inflammation” can trigger Alzheimer’s, cancer, arthritis, asthma, gout, psoriasis, anemia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and depression—are triggered by low-grade, long-term inflammation, Perricome MD reported.

However, exercise, diet and supplementation can all play a part in reducing inflammation.

Queen Letizia might follow a very important strategy when it comes to sugar, limiting excessive dietary sugar (especially from sugary drinks) which is linked to chronic inflammation.

She may also limit her alcohol intake, saturated and trans fats, and refined carbs.

According to Dr Perricone, fine lines and wrinkles are not an “inevitable” part of ageing. Rather, following a diet rich in antioxidants and high-quality proteins – as well as the right vitamin supplements and skincare – can help anyone address the “visible signs of aging from the inside-out, and the outside-in”.

The 28-day programme, which asks dieters to eliminate foods linked to inflammation and weight gain, can be described as “simple, nutritious and best of all – delicious”.

If Queen Letizia does follow this diet, she may limit – or ditch all together – bread, cereal, crackers, fried food, fruit juice, jelly, pasta, pizza, potatoes, rice, snacks such as pretzels and chips, soft drinks, tortillas, tacos, ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbets.

Meals should include lean protein and carbohydrates (fruits and/or vegetables) and essential fatty acids (olive oil or fresh, unsalted nuts).
