Just a reminder that looking directly at the Sun, at any time, may cause severe damage to the human eye, not just during eclipses.

Protect your precious gift of vision that the Sun’s rays can take away in seconds.

Last Nov. 17, I woke up early and smiled as I saw a beautiful bright red sunrise as I had so many times in my 67 years. Within a few seconds, however, three tiny holes had burned into my retina and I saw a “black curtain” start to close on my left eye as my retina began to detach.

I received excellent medical care and kindness from strangers, and after several surgical procedures I am close to having my vision restored.

Leading up to the April 8 solar eclipse, I heard of parties being planned and I saw articles about the dangers of unprotected sun-gazing causing eye damage, disease and even blindness.

I was happy to celebrate our total eclipse of the sun as we pray for peace around the world. And I’m happy to share my small story in the hope that it may save eyes.
