We live on King Street close to Prince Road, not far from the Essex Terminal Railway tracks in west Windsor.
Our young neighbour David, 6, would hear the train whistle and run down to Prince to watch the trains go by. My wife said we should buy him a train set, which we did. Then I thought, I wonder if I e-mailed ETR if they would let David get up close to a train?

Burton Dauncey, ETR’s assistant chief mechanical officer, e-mailed me back, inviting little David to visit. Burt met us at Lincoln Road and was so accommodating. Four of us climbed up and into the seats of a large locomotive.

Burt started this giant train engine and brought it over a road, explaining that the arms that block roads are automatically controlled but I think he said that the engineer can also activate them.
Little David and his sister Adiyah were very excited. Burt even let David blow the train whistle he loved. Back at the engine house, Burt had gifts left over from another event and David and his sister got lucky — a fold-up seat with the ETR logo. Pretty cool.
One thing for sure — getting on and off that engine is not for me.
I want to thank Burt Dauncey and ETR for a VERY memorable experience that I’m sure little David and Adiyah will never forget.
Oh, David ran up and down the block: “I drove the train! I drove the train!”
