County residents who dine out at specific restaurants Wednesday can also support Amherstburg Community Services’ Meals on Wheels program.

The annual event sees participating restaurants donate from $1 to $5 from each meal served that day to help Meals on Wheels.

“It’s meant to bring awareness to our Meals on Wheels program and the nutritional needs of seniors in our community,” said Kathy DiBartolomeo, executive director of Amherstburg Community Services (ACS).

The agency serves about 110 clients in Amherstburg, LaSalle, McGregor and Harrow.

Bringing meals to seniors who aren’t mobile helps keep them in their homes for longer, said DiBartolomeo.

“It’s great too, for giving their caregivers a little bit of a relief, knowing that someone else is bringing them a meal and also having contact with them so they know they’re OK.”

Clients who sign up to receive meals can decide on the duration of their service, she said.

“They can receive the meals for as long and as often as they would like. If somebody is coming out of surgery, they can sign up for that. That’s a really big help for people when they’re recuperating.”

Several restaurants are participating in Wednesday’s fundraiser, including:

Finding drivers to deliver meals has always been a challenge, but now increasing food prices are also an issue because Meals on Wheels endeavours to make meals affordable for their clients, said DiBartolomeo.

“It’s getting more difficult … because we know the food prices continue to rise. You try to keep the cost of the meal low so that the seniors can actually afford it.”

Last year, the ACS prepared and delivered more than 16,600 meals in the four communities.

Dave Hayes, owner of Gilligan’s, said supporting the fundraiser is a way of giving back to the community after his restaurant received a lot of support during the difficult COVID-19 restrictions.

“The cost of living is going up and everybody can use a little bit of help,” he said. So any little bit that we can help out, would be very beneficial.”
