The doctors at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar can no longer prescribe MRI and CT scans without proper investigation of their patients.
The Capital Hospital authorities have taken a tough stand on MRI and CT scans being done at the Capital Hospital and issued a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for the doctors.
According to the hospital authorities, a number of patients are being prescribed for MRI/CT Scan causing a heavy load on MRI/CT scan departments for which the quality of service is being hampered.
On verification, it was found that some fake prescriptions were also being received from outside doctors and quacks.
As per the order issued by the office of the Capital Hospital Director, the hospital’s doctors are prescribing MRI/CT scans after the first visit without clinical findings and basic investigations.
To improve the MRI/CT scan service at the hospital, the Director has issued the following guidelines:
1. The faculties concerned, i.e., specialists or above of Capital Hospital and assistant professors or above of PGIMER, will advise for an MRI/CT scan only, and that will be accepted by the concerned facility for an MRI/CT scan. Emergency cases would be given priority.
2. All such prescriptions for an MRI or CT scan should contain reasonable clinical findings, the reason for referral, a full signature with a date, and the seals of concerned faculties.
3. The doctors should advise MRI/CT scan investigations only related to their own discipline or department.
4. Forms related to MRI and CT scans should be properly filled up. It should be mentioned clearly whenever it is urgent with adequate cause. Incomplete forms will not be accepted pending rectification.
5. It is found that some doctors and students are entering the MRI and CT scan rooms and pressurising technicians to do the MRI and CT scan as per their wishes and to supply extra films, etc. Such activities should be stopped henceforth and will be viewed seriously.
