Anuj Thapan, accused in the Bollywood actor Salman Khan house firing case, has died in a hospital in Mumbai. Anuj had reportedly attempted suicide while being in custody. The Mumbai police rushed Anuj to the hospital on Wednesday after he took the extreme step but died hours later.
Anuj Thapan and another accused, identified as Sonu Subhash Chander, were arrested by the Mumbai Police in April for allegedly supplying guns to shooters Vicky and Sagar, who fired multiple rounds of bullets outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Bandra on April 14.
What drove Anuj Thapan to suicide is under investigation. Former Maharashtra senior police officer PK Jain told NDTV that any death in a lock-up is reported as a murder case. “All the policemen in the police station will be questioned by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department),” Jain said.
The police typically ensure lock ups are checked regularly for any object that could be used as a weapon to attack another person or a means to die by suicide.
Two others, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal who allegedly fired the shots, are also in police custody. Both were seen on CCTV leaving the area on a motorcycle on the night the incident happened.
All the four accused are known to be directly or indirectly connected with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi who had earlier threatened to kill Salman Khan. Bishnoi’s younger brother Anmol had reportedly claimed responsibility for the firing in a post shared on Facebook hours after the incident took place on April 14.
