Sask. teachers to withdraw noon-hour supervision for one day in latest job action

Teachers across Saskatchewan will withdraw voluntary noon-hour supervision Thursday as part of ongoing job action.

The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) announced the new sanctions Monday morning, a day after it announced a new round of rotating strikes affecting some 4,300 teachers and 65,300 students to take place Wednesday.

“Teachers will not be available to supervise students who are eating lunch at school or taking part in noon-hour activities. Teachers will leave the building during each school’s designated lunch break period,” said a news release from the STF.

The responsibility to provide noon-hour supervision rests with the divisions, and teachers offer it voluntarily, the release notes, adding school divisions will alert parents and caregivers of any “operational or schedule changes due to Thursday’s job action.”

“School boards face the impossible task of balancing government funding shortfalls and the rising costs of services that students need. Students and families are caught in the middle, and I encourage every parent and caregiver in the province to let our government officials know how they feel about that,” said STF president Samantha Becotte in the release.

“Parents in several school divisions are forced to pay out-of-pocket fees of $100 or more for their kids to stay at school over the noon hour.”

While it’s understood the withdrawal will impact students, the STF encouraged parents and those affected to write to their MLAs and school board trustees.

This week’s rotating strikes involve Creighton School Division, Northern Lights School Division, Prairie Spirit School Division, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Saskatoon Public Schools on Feb. 7.

The first rotating strike was held on Feb. 1 and involved five teachers’ associations. Job action began with a one day, provincewide strike held by the STF on Jan. 16, involving its 13,500 members. A second provincewide strike was held on Jan. 22.
