The Saskatchewan Roughriders took care of business on Friday night.

Debuting their new obsidian green alternate uniforms, the Roughriders topped the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19-9 in front of 29,649 fans at Mosaic Stadium in Week 7 of the CFL season.

After suffering their first loss of the season one week ago against the B.C. Lions, the Riders bounced back to improve to 5-1 in the West Division while the Bombers dropped to 2-5.

The Bombers opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by Sergio Castillo on the first drive of the game to put Winnipeg on top 3-0 early.

Later in the first quarter, after Riders’ quarterback Shea Patterson connected with Kian Schaffer-Baker for three first downs to get Saskatchewan to Winnipeg’s 20-yard line, Brett Lauther kicked a 28-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3.

Winnipeg responded with a 56-yard field goal in the second quarter before Lauther evened the game 6-6 with a 41-yard field goal.

On Saskatchewan’s second drive of the second half, Patterson started the series with a 21-yard rush before connecting with Ajou Ajou for a pair of first downs.

From there, Patterson found a wide-open Clint Ratkovich in the end zone as the fullback caught his first CFL touchdown from 15 yards out to put Saskatchewan on top 13-6 with the convert.

As the Bombers were looking to respond, Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros was intercepted by Riders’ linebacker Adam Auclair on the Saskatchewan 19-yard line.

After a fortunate pass interference call gained them 29 yards, Patterson found Ajou on a short pass before the rookie receiver broke a tackle and scampered 33 yards.

However, the Riders couldn’t find the end zone as Lauther was called in to kick a 31-yard field goal to make it 16-6 Saskatchewan to begin the fourth quarter.

With 5:51 left in the game, Castillo responded with his third field goal of the night for Winnipeg to make it 16-9.

The Bombers tried to put another scoring drive together on their next series, but before they could score, Riders’ linebacker Jameer Thurman caught Bombers’ receiver Nic Demski from behind after a big gain and punched the ball loose.

After the Riders recovered the fumble, Patterson connected with Ajou for a 46-yard gain before Lauther came in to kick a 32-yard field goal to make it 19-9 with 1:32 left.

From there, the Roughriders defence closed out the game to secure the win.

Saskatchewan will now travel to Montreal on Thursday to take on the 5-1 Alouettes, who were on a bye this week.

More to come…
