Scorpions set tricky victory target by Windies Academy

The Jamaica Scorpions will need to score 234 runs if they are to record their second victory of the season in the West Indies 4-day Championship after dismissing the West Indies Academy team right on stumps for 281 on Friday’s penultimate day at Sabina Park.

The Scorpions resumed at 326-7 with the intention to bat through the opening session but within the space of an hour they were dismissed for 372.

Peat Salmon fell short of a maiden century after making 81, having resumed on 60. Derval Green added 10 to his overnight score to be dismissed for 35. Joshua Bishop ended with career-best figures of 6-96. 

The Scorpions held a 48 run lead but in the space of six overs that evaporated on the back of an aggressive 52 from Kadeem Alleyne.

However, from 59 without loss, the Windies Academy slipped to 82-4 when Teddy Bishop became the first of four victims for Abhijai Mansingh.

Jamaican Jordan Johnson made 26 before falling to Mansingh and it was left to Carlon Bowen Tuckett who made 53, to revive the innings.

The right hander received support from Joshua James 36, Ashmead Nedd 30 and Johan Layne 22 to get the visitors to a respectable 281 all out. Mansingh ended with 4-70 and Peat Salmon 3-55.

In the meantime, leaders Windward Islands Volcanoes boosted their chances of remaining unbeaten in the competition after reducing the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to 10-2 at stumps on day 3 of their contest.

Resuming on 59-2, the Windwards were eventually dismissed for 288 with Sunil Ambris top scoring with 71 and Jeremy Solozano making 70. Shamar Springer also contributed 40.

Jayden Seales took 3-25, while there were two wickets each for Anderson Phillip, Bryan Charles and Khary Pierre.

The Red Force then lost two wickets towards the end of the day, Kjorn Ottley falling for 2 and Vikash Mohan for 1.

Meanwhile, the Barbados Pride require a further 312 runs to beat the Guyana Harpy Eagles in their contest at Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

Resuming on 59-3 in their first innings, the Pride were dismissed for 230 with Jonathon Drakes making a top score 101 and Shane Dowrich getting 41. Nial Smith took 3-54 with 2 wickets each for Isaiah Thorne and Gudakesh Motie.

Guyana then posted 136-8 with Kevlon Anderson making 33 against 3-32 from Jomel Warrican. The Barbados franchise who were set a target of 343 for victory, got to stumps at 31 without loss. 

The Leeward Islands Hurricanes chasing 316 for victory against the Combined Campuses and Colleges, were 15 without loss at the St Augustine ground in Trinidad and Tobago.

The CCC restarted day at 76-3 in their second innings and progressed to 301 all out.  Yannick Ottley made 99, while Jamaican Odaine McCatty chipped in with 37. Rahkeem Cornwall claimed 4-62 and Jeremiah Louis 3-59.
