A major police/military operation has been launched in Grange Hill, Westmoreland in response to violent threats which resulted in the disruption of classes at the Grange Hill primary and high schools in the parish.
The area is tense due to conflict involving two gangs.
At least five people have been killed in the area in a matter of days.
Parents and guardians descended on Grange Hill Primary School on Tuesday after they reportedly received a threat that the institution would be attacked by gunmen.
The issue caused panicked parents to pull their children from school before classes ended.
Classes were held remotely on Wednesday due to fear among parents.
A curfew has since been imposed in the area.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Clifford Chambers, head of Area One, said members of the security forces have increased their presence in the area.
He said he has had discussions with the principals of both the primary and high school to reassure them, even as the police continue efforts to cauterise the situation in the community.
Grange Hill High School has said it will resume in-person classes Thursday following assurance from the police that it is safe to do so.
