Oblique Seville sent a strong message ahead of the Jamaica Olympic Trials, running the fastest 100 metres in the world this year with a time of 9.82 seconds, defeating reigning world champion Noah Lyles at the sixth Racers Grand Prix at the National Stadium on Saturday night.
Seville, aided by a tailwind of 0.9 metres per second, broke his prior personal best of 9.86 seconds and dominated American star Lyles, who finished second in 9.85 seconds, just shy of his best of 9.83 seconds. Kenyan speedster Ferdinand Omanyala finished third in 10.02 seconds.

The 23-year-old Seville, coached by Glen Mills, former coach of legend Usain Bolt, expressed surprise at his victory.
“I feel good,” Seville said. “I’m a little surprised. It’s special to be able to run so fast without too much specific work. It shows that I can still do better.” Seville even had time to look across at Lyles as he crossed the line.
Seville and Lyles both surpassed the previous world best of 9.93 seconds set by Americans Christian Miller and Kendal Williams.
The flamboyant Lyles completed a sprint treble at last year’s World Championships in Budapest to end the season as the undisputed best sprinter in the world. At this summer’s Paris Olympics he is looking to become the first American to be crowned world’s fastest man at the Olympics in 20 years .
In Tokyo in 2021, Lyles won the bronze in the 200m.
