SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the two new SVHC listed on the Candidate List and the legal obligations this places on industry. 
(1888PressRelease) July 14, 2023 – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at the two substances added by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to the Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC).
The two substances were added on June 14, 2023, increasing the number of entries from 233 to 235.
The substances are:
1. Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide
2. Bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulphone
The first substance is classified as toxic to reproduction. It has a wide variety of applications, including in adhesives, sealants, inks, coating, plasters and modelling clays.
The second substance is classified as very persistent and very bio-accumulative (vPvB). It is used in the manufacturer of chemicals, plastics and rubber products.
SGS has published SafeGuardS 081.23 to help stakeholders understand the implications of the two SVHCs being added to the Candidate List. In addition to details of the two substances, the SafeGuardS also covers legal obligations, which now include notifying the ECHA (Waste Framework Directive, WFD) if an article contains more than 0.1% of any SVHC on the Candidate List.
