Singapore has once again secured its position as the fifth least corrupt country globally, according to the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index. The index, which scores countries on a scale from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean), revealed that Singapore maintained a score of 83 in 2023, consistent with the previous year.
The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), responsible for tackling corruption in Singapore, released the 2023 index, asserting that the corruption situation in the country “remains firmly under control.” The CPIB highlighted the consistently low number of public sector corruption cases and pointed to Public Perception Surveys, which regularly indicate strong public confidence in Singapore’s anti-corruption measures.
In addition to the Transparency International index, Singapore excelled in other global rankings. In the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index 2023, Singapore secured the third position globally for the absence of corruption out of 142 countries, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining institutional integrity.
The Political and Economic Risk Consultancy’s 2023 “Report on Corruption in Asia” further recognized Singapore’s anti-corruption efforts, ranking it as the top economy out of 16 in the region. This acknowledgment underscores Singapore’s success in fostering a clean and accountable business environment.
Despite recent challenges, such as the resignation of Transport Minister Subramaniam Iswaran due to corruption charges, Singapore continues to demonstrate resilience and effectiveness in its anti-corruption endeavors. The country’s ability to navigate such incidents without compromising its global standing reflects its unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability.
