CorrectNG reports that a 70-year-old Ugandan Safina Namukwaya, welcomed a set of twins, making her the oldest woman in Africa to give birth.
In what is described as a medical miracle, doctors said on Thursday that both mother and children, a boy and girl, are healthy.
She delivered the babies through cesarean section on Wednesday at a medical facility in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, where she had received fertility treatment.
According to local media, Safina conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala.
The hospital said; “Celebrating our 20th anniversary, we’ve achieved the extraordinary – delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother aged 70!. This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
Namukwaya said this was her second delivery in three years, following the birth of a girl in 2020, when she was 67.
The mother recounted how she experienced difficulties during the pregnancy, including being abandoned by the children’s father.
