There was a sense of calm on the faces of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos and superstar forward Percy Tau as they faced the media for the last time before their opening Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) group E clash against Mali at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo, Ivory Coast.
It’s been a long road since that first qualifying match where Broos’ side went down 2-1 to Morocco (9 June 2022) and then had to wait 288 days before taking on Liberia (24 March 2023) at home, but that advantage counted for nothing as they succumbed to a shocking 2-2 draw.
Bafana simply needed to secure a victory in the away leg on (28 March 2023) and their qualification was assured as Zimbabwe was disqualified from contention due to government interference in the administration of the game.
