The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team will be entering exam season with a 100 per cent grade and at the top of their class as the team sits No. 1 in Canada West rankings with a perfect 10-0 record.

Helping the Huskies continue their winning streak on the weekend were a pair of dominant victories over hosts Winnipeg Wesmen.

On Friday night, led by a game-high 23 points from Téa DeMong, Saskatchewan claimed an 89-40 victory and followed that up on Saturday night with a 101-34 win thanks to a game-high 19 points from Carly Ahlstrom.

Meanwhile, the men’s team also picked up a pair of back-to-back victories over the Wesmen, albeit with a closer score.

The Dogs outscored Winnipeg in all four quarters in Friday’s action leading to a 56-49 victory, with Emmanuel Bonsu scoring a team-high 10 points.

Bonsu also helped lead his team to victory the next night, chipping in a game-high 15 points as the Huskies won 72-69.

The victories improve the men’s record to 6-4 and eighth in Canada West.

VOLLEYBALL

Saskatchewan’s volleyball teams also took on the Wesmen this weekend, but at home instead of on the road.

On the men’s side, Emmett Graham picked up 15 kills in both Friday and Saturday’s games, but led to opposite results for the Huskies as they won 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-23) the first night, but fell 1-3 (22-25, 23-25, 28-26 and 24-26) the next night.

The Huskies will finish the 2023 year second in Canada West with a 9-3 record.

Over in women’s action, Saskatchewan’s losing streak increased to five games following losses on both nights.

Friday’s game was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately ended in Winnipeg’s favour 3-2 (28-26, 25-13, 18-25, 22-25 and 15-7) despite Saskatchewan’s Keely Anderson earning 15 kills and 20 digs.

The next night, the U of S fell once again 1-3 (18-25, 16-25, 25-23 and 9-25), with Anderson recording 16 kills.

A 5-7 record, leaves the Huskies in seventh place in Canada West.

HOCKEY

Sophie Lalor scored twice to lead the Huskies women’s team to a 5-2 victory on Friday night against the host Mount Royal Cougars.

She was joined on the scoreboard by teammates Mallory Dyer, Kelsey Hall and Kennedy Brown, while Camryn Drever stood tall in net, stopping 31 of 33 shots.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s result was the exact opposite as Saskatchewan fell 5-2.

In that game, Mount Royal scored a pair of goals in both the first and second periods as well as a single in the third period, while Jacquelyne Chief and Sara Kendall were the lone scorers for the green and white.

Colby Wilson started in goal for the Huskies, stopping 15 of 19 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period by Drever, who went four for five.

With the split results, Saskatchewan is now fourth in Canada West with a 10-5-0-1 record.

Meanwhile, the men’s team will end the year on a low after losing both of their games against the visiting Cougars.

On Friday night, Justin Ball scored on the power play for Saskatchewan late in the first period, but it was the only time the Dogs found the back of the net as they fell 3-1.

Saskatchewan goalie Roddy Ross made saves on 24 of 27 shots.

The amount of goals scored nearly tripled on Saturday night, but it didn’t help the Huskies as they lost 7-4.

Chantz Petruic, Ben Tkachuk, Carter Stebbings and Vince Loschiavo all scored for Saskatchewan in the game, while Jordan Kooy went 24 for 29 in net.

The losses drop Saskatchewan to a 11-5-0 record, fifth in Canada West.

Sask. competes at Canadian Senior Curling Championships

Saskatoon’s Team Bruce Korte and Martensville’s Team Nancy Martin are in Vernon, B.C. representing Saskatchewan for the next week at the men’s and women’s Canadian Senior Curling Championships from Dec. 3 to Dec. 9.

Joining Korte will be lead Rory Golanowski, second Kory Kohuch and vice-skip Darrell McKee. They were set to begin action in the event’s second draw, starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The women’s team — which includes lead Catherine Inglis, second Nancy Inglis and vice-skip Deanna Doig alongside Martin — were to open the championship taking on Newfoundland and Labrador in the first draw Sunday at 6 p.m.
