Steve Bannon has claimed Donald Trump is “a moderate” and that if he loses, people will “pine” for a figure like him as the MAGA movement becomes “more powerful.”
Speaking to John Heilemann and host Tim Miller on Sunday’s edition of Showtime’s docuseries The Circus, the former president’s former chief strategist, who left the White House in 2017, said Trump and the “stealing of the 2020 election” were “litmus tests” in the “civil war between the Republican establishment and MAGA.”
He said: “This movement is going to go on long after Donald Trump. It’s only going to get more powerful and broader. Even if a Democrat was to win there’s no compromising.”
He said: “President Trump is a moderate in our movement. You are going to pine in future years that you wished Donald Trump was around.”

Trump is the frontrunner in the GOP primaries with the support of around 57 percent of Republican voters.
On a national level, he is also beating President Joe Biden in five key swing states, according to latest polling data published last week by The New York Times and Siena College, making him the likely next President.
However, his fate could be compromised by a series of legal woes. He faces four criminal cases, two of which pertain to his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The poll showed that if Trump were to be convicted of criminal charges against him, some of his support in some swing states would erode by about 6 percent. He has denied wrongdoing in all of these cases.
Meanwhile, Bannon was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022 for defying a congressional subpoena issued to him by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack. He was sentenced to four months the following October but has not spent any time in jail pending the result of his appeal.
Newsweek contacted a representative for Bannon by email to comment on this story.
Elsewhere during the show, Miller pointed out a recent story about a MAGA lawyer who identified the top five priorities for another Trump presidency, including firing the “deep state” executive branch, indicting the whole Biden family, deporting 10 million people, detaining people at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, and pardoning every January 6th defendant. “What do you think about that five?” Miller asked.
“I think it’s fantastic,” Bannon said. “We are going to start the largest deportation program in history.”
