Winds of 100mph have sparked tornado alerts across the UK with fears the 100mph gusts could present a possible danger to life as Storm Debi hits today.
A Severe Weather Forecast Tornado Watch alert has been issued by the UK’s Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) with large hailstones as big as 20mm also forecast.
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning in the north west from 10am to 4pm warning those living in the area to expect flying debris, damage to buildings and powercuts.
The north of the country is expected to see the worst of its impact, with weather warnings in place in Manchester, Sheffield, and Liverpool as well as St Davids and Bangor in Wales.
A TORRO spokesman said: “This forecast is concerned with the risk of one or two tornadoes, associated with the passage of the cold front of the system.
“A surge of dry mid and upper-level air will overspread the front through the second half of tonight and into Monday morning, associated with a pronounced upper trough.
“Strong lifting associated with this should cool mid-levels enough to allow convection to develop – perhaps as a strongly forced line over the RoI into SE N Ireland, and then a more broken line into Wales/N England and points east.”
