The Seoul Metro workers’ union reached an 11th-hour agreement with management on Tuesday night and called off a strike that was scheduled to start on Wednesday.
Labor and management representatives started negotiations at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and reached an agreement after almost six hours of talks. Seoul Metro accepted union demands to hire 660 more subway workers this year, particularly security staff.

Seoul Metro announced plans earlier this year to lay off 2,212 workers by 2026 and said on Tuesday that the union agreed that layoffs are necessary to reduce the company’s chronic deficit. But negotiations over the details will continue.
