Suella Braverman receives warm reception at Express party

A senior Labour official has claimed Suella Braverman wants to be the “most racist brown person in British politics”.

Speaking at a party conference fringe in Liverpool, National Executive Committee (NEC) member Mish Rahman said the Home Secretary is the “most far-right” holder of the job there has ever been.

Mr Rahman added that Ms Braverman’s “dog-whistles are now replaced by pure incitement”.

He said: “It’s like she is on some sort of personal driven mission to be the most racist brown person in UK politics in a personal quest for far-right acceptance.”

The comments came during a panel discussion outside the official conference hall, organised by Stand Up To Racism.

Mr Rahman spoke alongside Richard Burgon and Bell Ribeiro-Addy.

The comments were reported by the Huffington Post, which added that the NEC member said Rishi Sunak is trying to make “political capital” out of public concerns about immigration numbers.

The Labour official added: “At the front line of these attempts is his home secretary Suella Braverman who regularly warns us of these migrant ‘invasions’ and regularly promotes conspiracy theories suggesting that shadowy ruthless elites are pushing a programme of progressive politics designed to undermine Western democracies.”

He also claimed Rishi Sunak has been talking about how much it has in common “with the far-right Italian leader Giorgia Meloni”.

He said: “But the current plan to detain people and deport them to Rwanda is even more extreme than her anti-migrant program.”

Fellow speaker Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP said the Tories’ “entire election campaign is going to be based on racism”.

“We have to campaign against every manifestation of racism both against refugees and communities across the country.”

Richard Burgon said the Tories are “hurtling into far-right territory with the Rwanda plan and inflammatory rhetoric”.

Last year’s Labour conference also saw a race row directed at Kwasi Kwarteng, who a Labour MP claimed is “superficially” black.

The comments saw the Labour MP quickly suspended of the party whip, only to gain it back six months later.
