This August, Atlanta will host an action-packed weekend of racing brought to you by the National Cycling League (NCL).

On Saturday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m., Bearings Bike Works will host the Team Qualifier (982 Murphy Ave SW 982 A, Atlanta, GA 30310). Open and free to the public, this event will consist of bracket races with men’s and women’s heats alternating, providing an exhilarating experience for cycling enthusiasts. Participants will witness the action of street sprints, participate in a fun-filled kid’s ride, and enjoy an array of food truck offerings.

Then, on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m., the main ticketed event will take place: the NCL Cup Atlanta. Set against the backdrop of the world-class Porsche Experience Center Atlanta Driver Development Track, this criterium-style race is unlike any you’ve seen before.

On this occasion, 10 co-ed teams, featuring Olympians, former Tour de France competitors, and national champions, will tackle the technical .9 mile, 30-lap circuit on the track. Every lap promises a new round of excitement, thanks to the NCL’s innovative scoring system, which awards points to riders on every lap, not just at the finish line.

Adding to the excitement, the NCL will integrate the very latest sports technology, enhancing athlete, team, and fan experiences alike. As such, in-person, and remote spectators (through broadcasting on the Global Cycling Network) will both have access to real-time data and scoring via the NCL’s innovative scoreboard, marking a first in professional criterium racing.

Andrea Pagnanelli, NCL CEO, said, “With this dual approach of both open-to-the-public and ticketed events, our goal is to expand our love of cycling beyond fans watching races in person. It’s about having engaging athletes, exciting content, unique in-person and virtual experiences, and high-quality broadcasting.”

The championship race will culminate in one co-ed team being crowned victorious.

Proceeds of the ticketed event of Aug. 20 will benefit Bearings Bike Works, a nonprofit that utilizes bikes to help youth in Southwest Atlanta develop the skills necessary to successfully transition into adulthood and the workforce.
