This Popular Pressure Cooker Is Being Recalled—Here’s What We Know

The recall affects 930,000 Insignia pressure cookers.

It’s the perfect time of year to use a pressure cooker. You can have a fall-apart tender pot roast in less than an hour, perfect for staying cozy on a cold night. In other words, a pressure cooker’s rapid speed makes it seem, at times, like kitchen magic!

In most cases, pressure cookers are safe to use. But if you have an Insignia pressure cooker, it can pose a dangerous burn hazard. So far there have been 31 reports of incidents in which the contents were expelled under pressure. In some cases, this caused second-degree and severe burns—not good at all.

The reports led the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to announce a recall of 930,000 Insignia pressure cookers sold throughout the U.S. and Canada.

What caused the pressure cooker recall?

The inner pot volume markings on this Insignia model are inaccurate. The pressure cookers shouldn’t be filled past two-thirds capacity but the incorrect markings have led people to do so. If the cooker is vented using the quick release method or opened when the contents are being pressurized, the cooker’s contents can be “ejected.” Best Buy has received 17 reports of burn injuries (that includes second degree and severe burns) out of a total of 31 overall reported incidents.

The recalled electric pressure cookers were sold at Best Buy and on Amazon. Priced between $50 and $120 from October 2017 to June 2023, the cookers will have the Insignia brand name on the front. There is also a permanent on-product label located on its side, and the inner cooker pots are black with a nonstick coating and measurement markings.

The affected Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers have the following model numbers:

NS-MC60SS8
NS-MC60SS9
NS-MC80SS9

The electric pressure cookers are all six- and eight-quart capacity.
