More than $350 million has been spent to boost the Jamaica fisheries sector.
For years the National Fisheries Authority has been lobbying for resources to expand its capacity to better serve fish farmers.
Pointing to that $350 million expenditure, Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries Floyd Green has asserted that the cry for support did not fall on deaf ears.
As part of that expenditure, the ministry has launched the tilapia upgrade project with an aim to improve the fisheries sector and boost Jamaica’s food security.
This includes restoration of the tilapia ponds at the Ebony Park complex, operated under the auspices of the Heart Trust-NTA, which the minister says “will help them in their production of fish for the market… but outside of that is to use it as a training mechanism, to bring a new generation of fish farmers.”
“If you are going to expand the sector; if you’re going to built out the industry, you have to to have a strong training component,” he stressed.
He said the project will also focus on agri-business development, climate smart technology, and export expansion.
