The top one percent of workers in Korea earn W317 million a year on average (US$1=W1,351).
According to the National Tax Service, 199,591 workers or the top one percent of the wage earner bracket earned a total of W63.33 trillion in 2021, an average of W317 million each. The average among all salaried workers the same year was just W40.24 million.
Most of the top earners were in the capital region with 153,932 in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, taking up a whopping 77.1 percent. Some 88,885 of them or 44.5 percent were in Seoul alone.
Seoul therefore topped the list of 17 provinces and major cities across the country with 938 top wage earners per 100,000 population, followed by Gyeonggi Province (436), Ulsan (263), and Busan (205). The poorest regions were Gangwon Province (114), North Jeolla Province (121), and South Jeolla Province (149).
