A UNITED Nations official said that this year’s observance of Pride Month was a recognition of the strides made toward greater acceptance and protection of the LGBTQI+ community.
LGBTQI+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning. The “plus” sign represents other self-identifications under the umbrella of sexuality and/or gender.
“Pride Month also serves as a reminder of our ongoing mission to create a world where everyone is empowered to make informed choices about their bodies and lives, free from stigma and discrimination,” said United Nations Population Agency Philippine Representative Leila Joudane.
She added that the increasing global recognition of LGBTQI+ rights was a reflection of a fundamental shift in social and legal norms, leading to improved health outcomes and greater inclusion.
However, Joudane said that challenges remain, noting that in some countries, discrimination, stigma and violence experienced by LGBTQI+ people have resulted in severe health, social and economic disparities.

“These inequalities are exacerbated in conflict and crisis settings, where LGBTQI+ individuals may be particularly vulnerable to rights violations and lack access to essential health services,” she said.
Climate change has also affected members of the community, Joudane said, as pre-existing health conditions, higher poverty rates, and discriminatory practices can hinder their ability to cope with and recover from climate-related disasters.
The UNFPA, she added, would remain steadfast in its commitment to leaving no one behind by prioritizing the rights and inclusion of all people.
“By upholding the principles of equality, inclusivity, and human rights, we can create a world where every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live a healthy, fulfilling life with dignity and respect,” Joudane said.
