Venezuelan girl critical after stabbing at bar

A 16-year-old Venezuelan girl is fighting for her life at the hospital after being stabbed with a broken bottle allegedly by an ex-boyfriend on Sunday.

Josmayli Chiquinquira Mata Jiminez, 16, of Chickland Village in Freeport is in critical condition at the San Fernando General Hospital.

A suspect – a 23-year-old man of Baccus Trace, St Margaret’s in Claxton Bay – was detained.

The bloody confrontation took place at Driller’s Sports Bar in Couva.

Police said that that Jiminez was at the bar at around 4 p.m. when a man entered the premises.

The man armed himself with several bottles and broke them.

He then lunged at the teenager and stabbed her several times.

Patrons at the bar attempted to intervene but the perpetrator overpowered them and fled.

The victim was conveyed to Couva District Health Facility by patrons of the bar.

Her condition was stabilized and she was transferred by ambulance to the SFGH.

A report was made to the Couva Police Station and Sgt Basraj and PC Boodoosingh responded.

Hours after the attack, the suspect was detained in connection with the offence of wounding with intent.

PC Boodoosingh is continuing investigations.
