The White House’s yearly Christmas film, which showcased a cutting-edge tap dance rendition of a classic ballet, has been criticised on social media for its “Hunger Games aesthetic” and labelled as “tacky” and “tasteless.”
First Lady Jill Biden shared a 2.5-minute film of the New York City tap ensemble Dorrance Dancing’s rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” which features Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.
The video shows lavishly bedecked sequined dancers with elaborate headdresses twirling through a White House hallway lined with candy cane columns to the Blue Room, which is decorated with Nutcracker-inspired décor and Christmas trees lit in both white and coloured lights.
Many users were left scratching their heads at the strange artistic statement, which the first lady said featured “magic, wonder, and joy.” Some even yearned for the simpler-to-digest Christmas film with a patriotic theme that former first lady Melania Trump shared in 2020 as per the New York Post.
“How utterly tacky, tasteless and ANTI Christmas. Melania’s was tasteful, seasonal, appealed to everyone and was absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous,” said one commenter.
The technicolour images were likened by several users to scenes from a dystopian movie.
“Disney presents clockwork Orange,” one person commented.
