A woman in her 70s who tried to help was also injured and had her cellphone stolen.
Now, cops say they are zeroing in on the suspect they believe is responsible. For cops in the Hammer, he is a familiar face.
According to detectives, a warrant has been issued for Alexander La, 23, of Hamilton, who has been described as “armed and dangerous.”
On May 30 around 8:30 p.m., officers were sent to a disturbance call at 175 Hunter St. W. in the downtown area. Concerned neighbours had called 911 saying that two males were trying to break in to a residential unit and were armed with guns.
When officers arrived, they found a woman in her 40s covered in blood caused by being struck in the forehead with a gun. They also found a woman in her 70s who tried to help the first victim. She suffered a minor injury and her phone was taken.

The two male suspects had fled.
The first victim was treated in hospital and released.
La is wanted for two counts of failure to comply with probation, possession of a firearm contrary to order, robbery with a firearm, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Detectives are still trying to identify a second suspect.
Almost two years earlier, on June 12, 2022, Hamilton cops responded to a brazen afternoon shooting in the area of Hess St. N. and Market St. Two males sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and several vehicles were damaged.
Cops identified the alleged shooter as Alexander La, then 21. Police said in a release during their manhunt for La that he was armed and dangerous. The outcome of that case is unknown.
If seen, Hamilton Police are appealing to the public not to approach La and to call 911.
Contact Det. Sgt. Catherine Lockley and/or Det. Const. Ruth Gill at 905-546-3833 with information, or to provide it anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
