A fire that started on Saturday night in the Shaheen Bagh area of southeast Delhi destroyed two shops and two apartments. Officials said there were no casualties recorded.

At 5:44 PM, the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a call stating that there was a fire in the electric lines outside the Zaika Restaurant on 40 Foota Road in Shaheen Bagh, news agency PTI reported.

Riyaz, a representative of the Shaheen Bagh Residents Welfare Association, told PTI, “We immediately informed the local police soon after a restaurant caught fire. By the time fire-fighting engines reached the spot, it had spread to the restaurant.”

After roughly eighteen fire tenders arrived on the scene, the fire was brought under control in about fifteen minutes. “Two flats also caught fire, but thankfully, no one was injured in the incident,” Riyaz said.

According to a police official, there was probably a short circuit in the electrical cables outside the Zaika Restaurant when the fire started. “The intensity of the fire was so high that it soon spread to the restaurant and its neighbouring restaurants and shops. Since the lanes were narrow, the DFS vehicles took time to reach the spot,” he added, as reported by PTI.

Social media users shared footage of the tragedy, which showed residents fleeing burning buildings. “No LPG cylinder blast or any other incident took place, otherwise, the damage could have been greater. The fire is completely doused now,” said DFS Station Officer Praveen Kumar.

According to the police, the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. One of the officers stated, “A case is being registered and further investigations are underway,” according to PTI.
