Malique Calloo, 27, was taken into custody in Michigan on Sunday by members of the United States Marshals Service.

He’s a suspect and wanted for first-degree murder by Windsor Police Service in the shooting death last Nov. 28 of Daniel Squalls, 24, in the 800 block of Hanna Street East.

Members of the local Major Crimes Unit and the Ontario Provincial Police-led Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad located Calloo in Michigan and worked with the U.S. Marshals Service to coordinate the arrest.

Earlier this year, Calloo was added to the Be On the Look Out (Bolo) program’s Top 25 list which brings together information about Canada’s most wanted criminal suspects.

“I want to commend the exceptional teamwork among partners and the persistence of our investigators, who never gave up on this case,” said Windsor police Chief Jason Bellaire.

“I also want to thank both the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance in arresting Calloo and our BOLO partners for their continued commitment to keeping our communities safe. It is our hope this arrest will help to bring some degree of closure to the victim’s family.”

A former student athlete, Calloo played on the basketball teams of Catholic Central High School and St. Clair College.

The fatal shooting occurred on the evening of Nov. 28. Residents of the neighbourhood reported hearing multiple shots fired.

Squalls was found on the street with gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital soon afterward.

Earlier this month, the local Crown’s office advised a Windsor judge that a murder charge against a second suspect, Hussein Al Hayawi, of Windsor, was being stayed. Al Hayawi, 26, had been taken into custody on Dec. 6 and had also been facing a charge of first-degree murder.

Despite the murder charge being dropped on the eve of his preliminary hearing, Al Hayawi remains in custody on other alleged firearms and drug trafficking offences.

Calloo was considered armed and dangerous and there was a $6,000 reward being offered for any information leading to his arrest and conviction.

According to Bolo, Squalls was living with a woman with two children, one of them his daughter, and with Calloo being the father of the second child. The couple was planning to move with the children to the U.S., which, according to Bolo, angered Calloo.

The two men were allegedly talking briefly on Hanna Street at about 4:30 p.m. before gunfire erupted. The Honda Civic in which Calloo had allegedly arrived was found the next morning, torched in a west Windsor alley.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 519-255-6700, ext. 4830 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-258-8477 (TIPS).
