Jason Wright’s added-time penalty earned Molynes another valuable point against another of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) top teams after a 2-2 draw with Portmore United at the Anthony Spaulding Complex on Sunday.
Wright scored in the 54th minute and 93rd, pulling Molynes from the jaws of defeat after Jamari Morriston, in the 58, and Stephen Barnett, in the 63, fired Portmore into a 2-1 lead after Wright’s opener.
Last week, Molynes held the previous league leaders, Mount Pleasant, to a 1-1 draw, and Wright, who took his tally for the season to seven with his two goals, said the draw was a fair result.
“It was a game we can feel proud about. It is a good point against a good team, and we can take it as a step at a time. It was a fair result. Both teams played in patches, they got chances, we got chances, but the points shared is a fair result,” he said.
Wright, recently called to a domestic national training camp, said he hopes to continue scoring as many as possible.
“For me, it is just representing myself, my family, my club and Jesus Christ in the best way I can.
“My goal is to score as many as possible. As a striker, I never really set targets because it is added pressure, and I want to play free, so I am just working hard, and wherever the numbers lie, it lies,” he insisted.
Portmore started better and had the best openings, but Molynes were solid in defence and looked a real threat in the attack.
Emilio Russeau was a constant threat from set pieces and crosses, and late in the first half he set up Barnett, who chested over from five yards.
Portmore continued to control possession after the break, but Molynes broke the deadlock when Wright turned home Enrique Gordon’s low cross in the 56th minute.
Portmore had two great chances immediately after through Clayton Peck, who hit the bar and then was denied by goalkeeper Peter Harrison, although Morrison headed home the equaliser soon after.
Barnett wrestled past his marker five minutes later and fired past Harrison to hand Portmore the lead.
Wright should have levelled the match minutes after, but he pulled his shot wide from eight yards out, while Jeremy Nelson also came close, but goalkeeper Tyrone Williams was equal to the task on two occasions.
However, Molynes were awarded a penalty in added time, which Wright converted.
Portmore’s coach, Philip Williams, also thought the draw was a just result.
“In terms of the time we gave up the equalising goal, it can be considered two points missed, but Molynes played a good second half, and both teams cancelled themselves out with some good football today,” he said.
