Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has voiced strong objections to the proposal for state police, arguing that it could exacerbate existing governance issues rather than resolve them. Appearing on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Dogara criticized the management of state functions and warned against further empowering governors.
Dogara, who served as a lawmaker for 16 years, expressed concerns over the current state of electoral commissions, which he claims have been manipulated by governors to ensure favorable outcomes in local government elections. He argued that if governors were granted control over state police, it could lead to even greater abuses of power, such as using the police to suppress opposition and rig elections.
Describing the idea of state police as “laughable,” Dogara highlighted the potential risks of such a move. He pointed out that many state-controlled functions, such as electoral commissions, have not been effectively managed, raising doubts about whether governors could responsibly oversee state police. Dogara warned that state police could become a tool for intimidation and control, undermining democratic principles and further entrenching the power of state governors.
The debate over state police has intensified, with some regional groups and governors advocating for its introduction to address security challenges like kidnapping and banditry. However, the proposal has faced criticism due to concerns about funding, potential misuse, and the readiness of state governments to manage such forces effectively.
Currently, several states have established their own security outfits, such as the Civilian Joint Task Force and the Amotekun Corps. While these groups have made strides in local security, they often lack the necessary resources and legal authority to tackle severe threats. Supporters of state police argue that constitutional backing could enhance the effectiveness of these outfits, but opponents, including Dogara, remain skeptical about the potential for misuse and the overall readiness of state governments.
As discussions continue, the outcome remains uncertain. President Bola Tinubu and many governors have shown support for the creation of state police, but the broader implications and challenges associated with such a move are still being debated.
