The chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Yobe State branch, Comrade Muktari Musa Tarabutu, has called on the federal government to fix the nation’s oil refineries and release the withheld eight-month salaries of university lecturers and workers in the State.
The workers union also called for the reduction of pump price of fuel.
Speaking to journalists after the peaceful protest against the removal of fuel subsidy on Wednesday in Damaturu, Tarabutu said: “there is nowhere in the world where Government leaves its citizens totally to the vagaries of the market without some measure of control and protection.
“The Federal Government should therefore deal decisively with the criminal content of subsidy instead of exposing the ordinary citizens to avoidable pain and hardship.
“It is imperative to fix all our Refineries to be able to cater for the domestic fuel consumption. Government should further go after parties associated with corruption such as over-invoicing, under-delivery of products, over estimation of national capacity, crude oil swap smuggling.
“We need to support poor and vulnerable Nigerians through structured and comprehensive social protection.”
