Experts say that shore crabs are probably the easiest to find, thanks to their easily recognisable ‘tooth-like projections’ and spiky shell patterns. These generally live across all coastlines in the country and are known to be the most abundant crab type here.
Frighteningly, another is known as the ‘spider crab’, which hosts 10 gigantic pincers that you probably don’t want to mess with. Believe it or not, these can grow to a staggering 45cm length – just slightly longer than a typical ruler.
And if you thought it couldn’t get any worse, ‘devil crabs’ also live among us. These are known for their piercing red eyes and lack of mercy, ready to snap at any moment they feel threatened.
More innocent-seeming hermits, broad-clawed and brown crabs live along the UK’s coastlines too. Brown crabs are what you’re most likely to find served in a seafood restaurant, growing up to 25cm wide and shaped a bit like a Cornish pasty.
So, now that you know what crabs are around us, can you guess which is lurking in the picture? If you’re a bit stuck – don’t worry – perhaps the clue is in the name. Think, what crab might hide away? And how exactly would it do this?
If you’re tired of searching, no matter, scroll down to find out the answer to this brain teaser once and for all.
