Over 200 million years ago, a mass extinction event paved the way for the rise of dinosaurs, previously thought to be due to global warming. Recent findings from scientists at Columbia University indicate that rapid drops in temperature may have been responsible instead.
The End Triassic Extinction, which eradicated around 75% of all species on Earth, has been a topic of extensive discussion among researchers. Historically linked to extensive volcanic activity that divided Pangaea—the Earth’s only supercontinent—these eruptions released considerable ash and lava across vast regions over what was initially believed to span over 600,000 years.
Earlier studies had attributed this significant event marking the start of the Jurassic Period primarily to an increased concentration of carbon dioxide resulting from these eruptions. This gas was thought to have contributed not just to global warming but also led to ocean acidification. New research claims that these catastrophic volcanic events occurred over much shorter periods—only decades instead of hundreds of thousands.
“The accumulation of carbon dioxide takes time; however, sulfate emissions can induce cooling almost immediately,” explained Dennis Kent, lead author and adjunct senior research scientist at Columbia Climate School’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “This brings us closer in understanding such events as their impacts could happen within a human lifetime.”
Results published on Monday in PNAS highlight how particles from sulfur compounds blocked sunlight during the eruptions, contributing significantly towards dramatic temperature declines and freezing much of life on Earth.
These volcanic activities emitted enormous quantities of sulfates that eclipsed sunlight leading temperatures into a downward spiral. The consequences were long-lasting winter-like conditions lasting several years which proved catastrophic.
Prior levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide before transitioning into the Jurassic Period stood at triple today’s current levels—it likely played a role in hastening extinction rates substantially according to researchers’ insights.
This extinction is also linked with widespread outbursts from Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), an area comprising submerged magma structures known for its extensive geological deposits rich with fossils dating back primarily from this era—including unique reptilian lizards and peculiar amphibians.
