According to the synopsis, the series will not only be based on the video games but will also tell an original story “that will be part of the canon of the games.” In other words, there will likely be connections between the games and the show.
Prime Video recreated the Pip-Boy wearable computer from the games for the announcement:
The series is being produced by Kilter Films, run by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld). Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley) will serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the series. Todd Howard, game director of the latest Fallout games, is also executive producing the series.
The cast of Fallout includes a laundry list of stars: Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), Aaron Moten (Emancipation), Moisés Arias (The King of Staten Island), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Michael Emerson (Person of Interest), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Frances Turner (The Boys), Dave Register (Heightened), Zach Cherry (Severance), Johnny Pemberton (Ant-Man), Rodrigo Luzzi (Dead Ringers), Annabel O’Hagan (Law & Order: SVU), and Xelia Mendes-Jones (The Wheel of Time).
In recent years, video game adaptations have begun to chip away at their terrible reputation. This year alone, we’ve seen HBO successfully adapt the tragic story of The Last of Us into a thoughtful and thrilling series and Nintendo turn Mario and Luigi into movie stars. Other recent success stories include the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and a string of animated originals on Netflix, such as Castlevania, Arcane, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
