Under-sink water filters—which are installed directly beneath your kitchen sink—can help remove impurities such as lead, chlorine, PFAS, (also known as “forever chemicals,” which the EPA recently put limits on) and pesticides, as well as improve the taste and odor of your water—but it’s important to make sure the filter you choose is certified to remove those contaminants (see below for information about certifications).

Reviewing the numerous options available, the Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow Claryum came out as our top overall pick due to its advanced filtration technology, excellent flow rate, and ability to remove up to 99% of 77 different contaminants.

When choosing a water filter that works best for your household, consider the specific contaminants you want to remove and check the certifications. Look for filters with a high flow rate for convenience during cooking and washing, and consider the filter’s lifespan and the cost of replacement cartridges to ensure the option works for your budget. Installation ease and compatibility with your existing plumbing and sink setup are also important factors to keep in mind.

The minimal maintenance required and the space-saving design also make it a quality option.

Keep in mind: The initial installation process of this water filter might appear challenging for those who are not comfortable with DIY projects. Buy it now on Amazon

Why we like it: Reverse osmosis water filters are some of the most effective at removing chemicals and particulates from water, applying pressure to force water molecules through a semipermeable membrane, leaving behind contaminants.

The APEC Water Systems ROES-50 Essence Series utilizes a 5-stage filtration process, including a membrane, to remove up to 99% of contaminants such as chlorine, lead, arsenic, nitrates, and other harmful impurities in your tap water at home. This comprehensive filtration not only improves the taste and smell of your water but also works to provide water that is more safe and healthy for drinking.

The ROES-50 system offers a large 50-gallon-per-day capacity, making it suitable for most households. Its simple installation makes it a convenient choice for homeowners, even those with limited DIY experience, and the cost-effective replacement filters and long lifespan are also a plus.

Keep in mind: This system’s reverse osmosis process can technically remove beneficial minerals along with contaminants, which may not be ideal for individuals who prefer mineral-rich water for its potential health benefits. It also has a slightly lower-than-average flow rate.

How we chose the best under-sink water filters

To find the best under-sink water filters, we researched reputable sites and read numerous scientific studies to understand which ones are the most effective when it comes to removing the most harmful contaminants from our drinking water. We also read through real customer reviews and took the following into consideration:

Filtration capabilities: The primary purpose of a water filter is to remove contaminants, so the filtration capabilities of each product were assessed. This includes the types of contaminants removed, such as lead, chlorine, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, as well as the filtration efficiency and technology used.

Flow rate: The flow rate determines how quickly water is filtered and available for use. Higher flow rates are generally preferred as they provide convenient access to clean water without significant wait times.

Ease of installation: A filter that is easy to install appeals to a broader range of consumers, especially those without plumbing expertise. Systems that come with clear instructions and require minimal tools or professional assistance were considered more favorably.

Filter lifespan: The longevity of filters and the cost of replacements affect the system’s long-term value and maintenance requirements. Longer filter lifespans and affordable replacement costs are important for cost-effectiveness and convenience.

Space efficiency: The size and design of the filter should be suitable for the available space under the sink. Compact systems that do not interfere with other plumbing or storage needs were preferred.

Water taste: Improved taste and odor of water are essential aspects of a good filter. Filters that enhance the overall quality and palatability of water were prioritized.

Build quality and durability: A well-constructed system that uses high-quality components is more likely to be reliable and long-lasting. Products with solid build quality and leak-proof fittings were rated higher.

Tips for buying water filter systems for under the sink

Filter type

When it comes to filter type, consider how each option might suit your specific water quality needs and preferences, including systems that are multi-step and have several filter types. Carbon filters are effective at removing chlorine, improving taste and odor, and eliminating some volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Reverse osmosis systems provide comprehensive filtration, removing a wide range of contaminants, including lead, arsenic, and fluoride, but they can produce more wastewater. Sediment filters are effective for removing large particles such as sand, rust, and debris from the water, which can improve taste and protect other filtration stages from clogging.

Under-sink space

Before deciding on an under-sink water filter, take stock of the available space beneath your sink to ensure a proper fit. Measure the height, width, and depth of your under-sink area to understand how much room you have to work with. Keep in mind that the filter system should not interfere with existing plumbing, garbage disposals, or other under-sink fixtures. Compact filters or systems with a modular design may be preferable for maximizing space and convenience.

Cost

The upfront cost of the filter should be considered as you decide on the right under-sink water filter for you, as well as long-term maintenance and replacement costs. Keep in mind that more complicated systems might require professional installation, which is an additional cost.

Flow rate

Flow rate measures how quickly the filter can produce clean water. A higher flow rate, typically measured in gallons per minute (GPM), ensures that you have a steady supply of filtered water for drinking, cooking, and other household tasks without significant wait times. As a general rule of thumb, aim for a flow rate of at least 0.5 GPM to maintain efficiency.

Why would you want an under-sink water filter?

When you fill a cup of water from your kitchen sink, the expectation is that what you’re sipping is, well, potable. That’s because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates drinking water in the United States, but there are still instances where chemicals and contaminants can seep into your water supply.

In fact, within the past few years, several U.S. cities have faced water crises due to issues such as lead or bacteria contamination, as well as the presence of contaminants like PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAs persist in the environment and the human body, accumulating over time and causing potential health risks such as increased cholesterol, liver damage, thyroid disease, and certain cancers.

A recent study by scientists at Duke University and North Carolina State University found that, while not all household filters were effective at removing the toxin, under-sink water filters were the most effective, with some achieving near-complete removal.

Frequently asked questions

Do under-sink water filters actually work?

Under-sink water filters work by removing contaminants such as lead, chlorine, pesticides, and other impurities from tap water. These systems use various filtration technologies, such as activated carbon and reverse osmosis, to improve water quality and safety. Using an under-sink water filter is a convenient and reliable way to access healthier drinking water on a regular basis.

Which under-sink water filter removes the most contaminants?

Reverse osmosis under-sink water filters tend to remove the most contaminants by utilizing a multi-stage filtration process that includes a reverse osmosis membrane to eliminate up to 99% of the bad stuff found in tap water, including lead, chlorine, arsenic, and other harmful substances. Keep in mind that reverse osmosis systems tend to remove the most, but can also in turn remove some beneficial minerals from your water as well.

What are the various certifications for under-sink water filters?

Many under-sink water filters boast various certifications that signal their effectiveness in removing specific contaminants. NSF/ANSI certifications are the most common, such as NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for chlorine, taste, and odor reduction, Standard 53 for lead and other heavy metals, and Standard 401 for emerging contaminants. Another certification to look for is the WQA Gold Seal, which indicates that the filter meets the Water Quality Association’s standards for safety and performance.

How much does it cost to install a water filter under a sink?

The cost of installing a water filter under a sink can vary depending on the type of filter, the complexity of the installation, and whether you hire a professional or do it yourself. On average, professional installation can cost anywhere from $100 to $300. If you choose to install the filter yourself, you may only need to pay for the cost of the filter, as most under-sink filters come with instructions and components for a DIY installation.
