Empowering Future Scientists: Penn State’s 2024 Climate Science REU Achievements
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa — The 2024 Climate Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Penn State, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, concluded successfully with 16 talented undergraduates showcasing their summer research through engaging poster presentations.
A Comprehensive Research Opportunity
This innovative REU initiative invites undergraduate students to delve into various aspects of climate science, encompassing scientific inquiry and effective science communication. The program is designed to immerse participants in the entire research process—right from formulating hypotheses to effectively sharing their findings and insights with both academic peers and a broader audience.
A Tradition of Excellence Since 2013
The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences has been facilitating this enriching REU program since its inception in 2013. Each summer, this initiative draws aspiring researchers from diverse locations across the nation to Penn State’s University Park campus. Here, they collaborate with esteemed faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students on various climate change projects.
Diverse Participation from Across the Nation
This year marked a record level of engagement as participants hailed from an impressive array of 16 different universities and colleges extending across states including California, Georgia, Texas, and New York. This geographical diversity not only enhances peer learning but also fosters collaborative networks among budding scientists eager to tackle pressing environmental issues.
