Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be back for the 2023 MLB All-Star Home Run Derby, set for Monday at 8 p.m. ET in Seattle, and his last performance was epic, but it was Pete Alonso who won that 2019 Home Run Derby in Cleveland. Guerrero set the record for home runs in a single Home Run Derby with 91 in 2019, but 11 of those came in an epic tiebreaker with Joc Peterson in the semifinals. Alonso edged the Toronto Blue Jays star 23-22 in the final for the first of consecutive Home Run Derby titles. Alonso is the favorite in a 2023 MLB Home Run Derby bracket that also features Guerrero and 2022 runner-up Julio Rodriguez.
Caesars Sportsbook lists Alonso as the +300 favorite (risk $100 to win $300) in its latest 2023 MLB Home Run Derby odds. Robert is the top seed in the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby bracket and the +500 third choice, also trailing Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at +450. Rodriguez, who will compete in his home stadium, is priced at +550, followed by the Rangers’ Adolis Garcia (+600). The other participants are the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts (+900), Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena (+900) and the Orioles’ Adley Rutschman (+1600). For Monday night’s big event, Hartstein is fading Pete Alonso, even though he has continued to perform for the struggling Mets. The expert knows the two-time champ is a deserving favorite, but he isn’t the top seed in the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby bracket. That honor went to Robert based on his performance since June 15. The White Sox star has 10 homers since then, while Alonso has four. Alonso hit 74 home runs in the 2021 Derby, but almost half (35) came in the first round. He wasn’t nearly as impressive in 2022, when he hit 43 over the first two rounds and lost to Rodriguez in the semifinals.
The Mets star has been back for more than a month from a wrist injury that cost him eight games this season. Still, a competition like this can take a toll, and Hartstein has concerns.
