Nwabali was one of the best players at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, and he was rewarded with a chieftaincy title in Port Harcourt
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali told Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface to start calling him ‘chief’ in a friendly exchange they had on Instagram, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nwabali was a revelation at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. The Chippa United star displaced Francis Uzoho, whose reliability was in doubt, and he did well for the Super Eagles.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper kept four clean sheets in the tournament and made two penalty saves in the semi-final against South Africa. Unfortunately, Nwabali could not help the team win the final, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Coted’Ivoire.
Following their performance at the AFCON, the Super Eagles players and staff were rewarded with national honours and property by the federal government.
Nwabali has gotten even more, as he was hosted by the Rivers State Government. Also, last week, the Nigerian goalkeeper received a chieftaincy title in Egbema Kingdom.
From his social media posts, it is apparent that Nwabali has not resumed at Chippa United.
In a recent development, Nwabali was engaged in a friendly exchange with Boniface on Instagram. Nwabali shared a video of himself in a house, donning Boniface’s Bayer Leverkusen jersey. Then, Boniface replied to the tweet, asking when he would resume at his club.
He also shared a video of the former Chippa United in his hometown when he received his chieftaincy title. He captioned it, “Na to give you Igwe remain for village.”
Then, Nwabali quoted the post Nwabali and replied, “Oga address me as a chief.”
Chippa United return to South African Premier League action on March 1, and Nwabali should be back in action before then.
