AFCON 2023: Teammates turn enemies

The Super Eagles tackle hosts Ivory Coast in probably the biggest group stage game of the 2023 AFCON, and a lot of quality will be on display

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play Ivory Coast in their second game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, Soccernet.ng.

The game is arguably the biggest in the competition because of the kind of quality that both countries possess. Nigeria and Ivory Coast have some of the best players on the continent, who ply their trades in Europe.

Coincidentally, some Nigerian players are teammates with Ivory Coast players at their clubs. Nottingham Forest star Ola Aina will be facing off against his club teammates Serge Aurier, Ibrahim Sangare, and Wily Boly.

Meanwhile, Paul Onuachu, who plays for Trabzonspor, will face off against his club teammate Nicolas Pepe. Terem Moffi will be up against his OGC Nice teammate Jeremie Boga, Ahmed Musa will lock horns with Max Gradel, and Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen will be paired with new teammate Hamed Traore.

Going into the game, the Elephants are slight favorites because of their home advantage and their recent form. Conversely, the Super Eagles are condemned to get a win or draw following their opening-day draw against Equatorial Guinea.
