Airdrieonians struck eight while Hibernian and The Spartans hit five each on a goal-laden second night of Premier Sports Cup group games.

Scottish Premiership side Hibs took their tally to 10 in two games since David Gray was made permanent head coach as they swept aside second-tier visitors Queen’s Park 5-1.

Fellow Edinburgh side The Spartans caused the biggest shock of the night as the League 2 team secured a convincing, five-goal win away to Cove Rangers from the division above.

Airdrieonians were 8-0 ahead of visiting Lowland League champions East Kilbride after only 53 minutes.

Meanwhile, another League 2 side caused a surprise as Forfar Athletic won 2-0 away to second-tier Dunfermline Athletic and League 1 outfit Montrose held top-flight visitors Motherwell to a draw.

Well took the bonus point in one of five games to go to a penalty shoot-out.

Group A

Queen of the South 2-0 Dumbarton: Forward Leighton McIntosh gave the hosts the lead after seven minutes, with midfielder Kieren McKechnie adding the second just short of the hour mark.

Airdrieonians 8-0 East Kilbride: Both debutant Ben Wilson, the striker signed from Cliftonville, and midfielder Lewis McGregor grabbed hat-tricks. Wilson got the ball rolling after two minutes from the penalty spot and had scored two more by the break along with McGregor, Rhys Armstrong, the midfield signing from Spartans, and Mason Hancock.

McGregor added two more within eight minutes of the half-time break.

Group B

Ayr United 1-0 Falkirk: Forward Anton Dowds’ fifth-minute goal was enough to give the home side victory over their Championship rivals.

Dundee United 3-0 Stenhousemuir: Striker Louis Moult put the Championship winners ahead after 25 minutes and centre-half Declan Gallagher added the second by the break before Kristijan Trapanosvki added the third two minutes after half-time for the winger’s first for the Tannadice side since signing this summer.

Group C

Elgin City 1-1 Kelty Hearts (5-4pens): The hosts were down to 10 men on the half-hour mark when centre-half Jake Dolzanski was sent off for a second bookable offence and fell behind on the stroke of half-time through on-loan Queen’s Park forward Scott Williamson.

However, winger Michael Dangana replied after 70 minutes and Elgin won the shoot-out 5-4.

Hibernian 5-1 Queen’s Park: Centre-half Warren O’Hora, the summer arrival from MK Dons, grabbed his first Hibs goal after 15 minutes before winger Martin Boyle added the second four minutes later and 18-year-old Rudi Molotnikov extended the lead further shortly before half-time.

Fellow midfielder Dylan Levitt and Boyle added two more before Jack Turner stoppage-time reply.

Group D

Annan Athletic 2-2 Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic (6-7pens): Bradley Barrett put the League 2 visitors ahead after seven minutes, but veteran rival midfielder Paul McGowan replied shortly after and fellow summer signing Paul Smith had the third-tier side ahead by the break.

However, former Stenhousemuir winger Bradley Rodden’s equaliser three minutes from time took the tie to a shoot-out, which Bonnyrigg won 7-6.

Arbroath 0-2 Dundee: Midfielder Luke McCowan broke the deadlock for the Premiership visitors six minutes after the break from the penalty spot, with Ethan Ingram scoring the 79th-minute second – the midfielder’s first since arriving from Salford City.

Group E

Cove Rangers 0-5 The Spartans: Cove suffered a humiliating drubbing at the hands of the visitors from the division below.

Striker Blair Henderson got the ball rolling for the League 2 side from the penalty spot after 17 minutes and was followed by Will Gillingham’s own goal before the break.

Midfielder Jamie Dishington and a double from striker Cameron Russell added to the hosts’ misery.

Dunfermline Athletic 0-2 Forfar Athletic: The fourth-tier visitors took the lead through striker Russell McLean after 28 minutes and the Championship side could find no reply to midfielder Mark Whatley’s second seven minutes after the break.

Group F

Alloa Athletic 0-0 East Fife (5-3pens): The League 1 side hosts took the bonus point after a goalless affair, with the side from the league below unable to add to Saturday’s surprise win over Greenock Morton.

Greenock Morton 1-0 Brechin City: The Championship hosts needed a Cammy Ballantyne goal – the midfielder’s first since switching from Airdrieonians – after 58 minutes to beat their Highland League visitors.

Group G

Montrose 1-1 Motherwell (4-5pens): Defender Shane Blaney looked to have given the Premiership visitors a narrow win thanks to his goal on the half hour, but midfielder Ali Shrive levelled for the League 1 side four minutes from time, although it was Well who took the bonus point after the shoot-out.

Clyde visit Edinburgh City in the group’s other midweek game on Wednesday.

Group H

Hamilton Academical 0-0 Stirling Albion (2-4pens): League 2 side Stirling took the bonus point after holding their Championship hosts to the second goalless draw of the night.

Raith Rovers 2-1 Stranraer: The Championship hosts looked to be heading for victory thanks to striker Jack Hamilton’s fifth-minute opener.

However, on-loan Airdrie midfielder Elliot Dunlop’s equaliser for the League 2 side with six minutes left appeared to be sending the game to a shoot-out until centre-half Callum Fordyce popped up with the winner in the dying seconds.
