Alcantara begins rehab assignment

4:46 PM UTC

Sept. 21: Sandy Alcantara (right UCL sprain) begins a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville
The number of innings/pitches Alcantara will throw was not known. According to manager Skip Schumaker, Alcantara came in “feeling great” on Sept. 19, a day after throwing his second bullpen session (20 pitches).

Sept. 20: 3B Jake Burger exits with right quad tightness
Burger felt the discomfort lunging for a throw from right fielder Jesús Sánchez during the third inning. The ball got away from Burger, who retrieved it and fired home. He could be seen massaging his right thigh, then trying to jog under the watchful eye of manager Skip Schumaker and a member of the training staff. Burger walked off under his own power.

Burger has a history of Achilles trouble, but he has never had issues with his quad. He will be reevaluated on Thursday morning — an off-day — and get treatment. He will do the same on Friday with the hope of returning to the lineup.

“The conversation I had out there with [trainer] Lee [Meyer] and Skip, was just like, ‘Hey, don’t want to push it and make it even worse, give yourself 48 hours and be ready to go,'” said Burger, who still felt tight and sore postgame. “I want to play always and stay in there. Obviously, it was a smarter decision to get out of that one and hopefully be ready to go on Friday.”

Since coming over in a Trade Deadline deal with the White Sox, Burger has hit .308 with 20 extra-base hits in 45 games.

Sept. 20: 2B Luis Arraez (left ankle sprain) still out of lineup
Arraez, who stepped on a baseball and twisted his ankle trying to field a grounder up the middle during infield drills prior to batting practice on Tuesday, wasn’t in Wednesday’s lineup for the series finale against the Mets.

“He feels better today,” manager Skip Schumaker said pregame on Wednesday. “Not in the lineup, so it’s not 100 percent yet, but I think he’s going to do everything he can to play, maybe even tonight. See how he feels later after treatment, but hopefully, definitely this weekend.”

Arraez, who became the fourth Marlin to reach 200 hits on Monday, has played in 144 of Miami’s 152 games this season. That total matches his career high, which he set in 2022 with Minnesota.

Sept. 20: C Nick Fortes (multiple hit-by-pitches) out of lineup
Fortes, who got hit by pitches on the right knee and right hand on Tuesday, stayed in the game until manager Skip Schumaker pinch-ran for him at second base during the ninth-inning rally. With rookie Eury Pérez on the mound on Wednesday, veteran Jacob Stallings was behind the dish.

“He seems better today,” Schumaker said of Fortes. “We were a little bit worried about how he was going to wake up, but he’s available today. We had [Jorge] Alfaro here just in case to see how he was feeling, but it seems like Nick’s doing really well in the training room and in the weight room, so I think he’s going to be OK.”

Sept. 20: LHP Matt Moore claimed off waivers; RHP Chi Chi González designated for assignment; RHP Tommy Nance placed on 60-day IL
Moore, who was claimed off waivers from the Guardians on Tuesday, was added to the active roster on Wednesday. The Guardians previously claimed him from the Angels on Aug. 31. As a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster, Tommy Nance was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville and placed on the 60-day injured list.

Moore, who made five relief appearances for Cleveland, would not be eligible for the postseason should Miami clinch a playoff berth since he was added to the roster after Sept. 1.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Moore, who arrived in Miami on Wednesday afternoon. “Over the last few weeks, I’ve been inching my way closer to a playoff team. It’s pretty exciting to come over here and jumping on board with these guys.”

RHP Sandy Alcantara (right UCL sprain)
Expected return: Potentially week of Sept. 25
According to manager Skip Schumaker, Alcantara came in “feeling great” on Sept. 19, a day after throwing his second bullpen session (20 pitches). He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Sept. 21.

Alcantara felt the discomfort on the 94th and final pitch of his Sept. 3 start against the Nationals. This marks his first time on the IL for an arm-related issue. (Last updated: Sept. 21)

OF Avisaíl García (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: TBD
García, who was placed on the injured list after undergoing an MRI on Aug. 23, began hitting and running progressions. García missed more than two months with left back tightness this season, and he landed on the IL twice with a left hamstring strain in 2022. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Huascar Brazoban (left hamstring strain, left hip impingement)
Expected return: TBD
Brazoban threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Sept. 18. He also tossed light bullpens on Sept. 12 and Sept. 15. He went on the IL on Aug. 14 for a left hamstring strain, then underwent an MRI over the weekend of Aug. 18-20, which revealed a left hip impingement. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Tommy Nance (left oblique strain)
Expected return: 2024
Nance is rehabbing in Jupiter, Fla., after sustaining the injury just two outings into a stint with Triple-A Jacksonville. He had missed significant time this season with a right shoulder strain, then was activated off the 60-day IL on Aug. 23. Nance didn’t pitch for the big league club before being optioned to the Jumbo Shrimp six days later. He was recalled and transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 19 to make room on the roster for Matt Moore. (Last updated: Sept. 19)

LHP Trevor Rogers (right lat strain and left biceps strain)
Expected return: 2024
Rogers began playing catch at loanDepot park on Sept. 18. He began throwing on Aug. 25, and he is doing so out to 75 feet four times a week. Previously, he had been in a no-throw status since he was scratched from a rehab start on June 10. According to Rogers, he felt and heard a pop while throwing warmup pitches and couldn’t lift his arm without pain. Rogers said he partially tore his lat, which has to naturally heal.

Rogers last pitched in the Majors on April 19, initially landing on the injured list with a left biceps strain. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Matt Barnes (left hip impingement)
Expected return: 2024
Barnes, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 28, is completing his rehab in Miami. The recovery timeline before Barnes can resume baseball activities is three months, meaning his season is likely over, unless the Marlins make a deep postseason run. Barnes slipped on the mound in mid-May against San Francisco, which led to the hip impingement. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Anthony Bender (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Bender, who was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 15, is throwing bullpen sessions and will progress to live batting practice soon. Bender underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 30, 2022. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Max Meyer (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Meyer is throwing at home in Minnesota. He saw Dr. Neal ElAttrache on July 24 after expressing that he had soreness in his right elbow, and an MRI revealed no structural damage. Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 9, 2022, after exiting his second MLB start on July 23 with 10 pitches. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

OF Jonathan Davis (right knee sprain)
Expected return: 2024
Davis, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 10 after undergoing surgery on July 6, ran on the field on Sept. 18. Davis had an MRI on July 5 that revealed a meniscus injury (not a tear) to his right knee, with a three- to six-month timeline for a return. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

RHP Sixto Sánchez (right shoulder surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Sánchez will throw a bullpen session in the next few days. Sánchez was scheduled for a bullpen on Sept. 15 and another outing (one or two innings, or 25 pitches) with Double-A Pensacola on Sept. 17, but he did not appear in the game. Sánchez threw one scoreless inning for the Blue Wahoos on Sept. 12, allowing a single and a walk with two strikeouts. It was his first game action since 2021 Spring Training. Prior to that, his previous game came during the 2020 NLDS.

Sánchez previously experienced a setback in June, with what the team called “slight shoulder soreness,” following an extended spring camp game. (Last updated: Sept. 18)
