Andy Murray Wimbledon 2023 schedule, next match for former champion

Andy Murray Wimbledon 2023 schedule, next match for former champion

Andy Murray is not the player he once was but still harbours hopes of challenging deep into Wimbledon — his most successful grand slam event — at the ripe old age of 36.

Murray was knocked out of Queens Club, the usual Wimbledon preparation tournament, by Alex de Minaur in the early rounds, but before that he won the ATP Challenger events at Nottingham and Surbiton on grass to boost his hopes this summer.

How will he fare this time around? Can the Scot reach the last eight for the first time since 2017, or even get as far as the final, as he did in 2012, 2013 and 2016?

The Sporting News runs through Murray’s All England Club record and charts his potential journey through the draw here.

Murray overcame a slightly sluggish start to storm to a 6-3 6-0 6-1 win over fellow Briton Ryan Peniston, retaining his perfect record in the first round of Wimbledon. Peniston, 27, was in the draw as a wildcard.

Murray will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in round two after the No. 5 seed overcame 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem in a fifth-set tie-break.

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon record

Between 2008 and 2016, Murray reached 11 grand slam finals, winning three of them (two Wimbledons and one US Open). Of the eight finals he lost, all were to one of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic and one of them came at Wimbledon — a four-set defeat to Federer in 2012.

In 2013 and 2016, Murray won Wimbledon, becoming the first male British player since Fred Perry in the 1930s to achieve that feat.

Aside from Wimbledon, Murray has won just one other grand slam title: the US Open in 2012, when he beat Djokovic in a classic five-set final, surviving a fightback from the Serbian to triumph after almost five hours. He’s not competed in the latter stages of a major tournament since 2017.
