Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid reportedly hugged a high school student as gunmen opened fire at their Super Bowl victory parade.

The champions were celebrating back-to-back wins when shooting unfolded, forcing players, staff and fans to be rushed to safety.

One person is confirmed to have died while 22 people have been injured. Police confirmed that three people have been detained following the attacks.

Among the chaos, Chiefs coach Reid was on hand to care for those impacted by the incident.

Gabe Wallace, a high school student from the Kansas City area, has said the 65-year-old looked after him during the shooting.

He reportedly told Kansas City Star columnist Sam McDowell that Reid hugged him and was ‘trying to comfort’ him as he escaped over security barriers to safety.

Wallace, who had cuts on his face, also described what happened at the scene, saying: “The security guard said get over the damn fence right now. There’s a shooter.

“We hopped over and I hit my face on accident.

“I had no idea if my friends were okay. It’s terrible.”

The teenager is also reported to have said he was thinking that his friends were dead as he was fleeing the incident.

Kansas City police department told fans to stay away from the Union Central train station after shots were fired around the area.

They posted a statement that read: “Shots have been fired around Union Station. Please leave the area.

“Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck. We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.

“Anyone nearby needs to leave the area as quickly and safely as possible to facilitate treatment of the shooting victims. Please avoid the Union Station parking garage area to allow first responders through.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led tributes with multiple stars sending prayers to anyone affected.

Gabe Wallace, a sophomore at Shawnee Mission East, heard the gunshots and hopped a barricade, scraping head on the concrete. He lost track of his friends.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” Chiefs’ team statement said.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.

“We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department.

“At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.

“We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”
